Any professional driver operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) will most likely need a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. This includes bus and truck drivers, although there are a few exceptions. The specific requirements which make it necessary for a driver to have a DOT physical are as follows:
1.) The driver operates a motor vehicle with a weight of over 10,000 pounds for interstate commerce purposes.
2.) The driver operates a motor vehicle that carries more than 15 people.
3.) The driver is paid to operate a motor vehicle designed to carry more than eight people.
4.) The driver is transporting hazardous materials that require a placard to be displayed.
These guidelines are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and they are meant to keep the public safe, considering that vehicles of a large size require special skills and attention to operate correctly.
A DOT physical will cover the general vitals and medical history of the examinee. This is meant to ensure that the drivers taking the exam do not have any health problems permitting them from operating commercial vehicles. The primary portion of the exam includes (but is not limited to):
1.) A vision test requiring a score of at least 20/40 both eyes. Participants may use their glasses or contact lenses.
2.) A hearing test. The use of hearing aids is acceptable for this test.
3.) Urinalysis to analyze any existing medical conditions and drug use.
4.) Blood pressure/pulse rate measurement to ensure the driver’s circulation is healthy for sitting extended amounts of time.
5.) The DOT also includes a physical examination which assess the driver’s
General appearance and overall physical health as well as neurological aspects such as balance, reflexes and speech.
When the exam is complete, the results certifies drivers for work from between 3 months to 2 years depending on their health performance of the driver.
If you have type II diabetes that’s controlled with oral medication alone, you’ll be able to pass your DOT physical. However, if you have type I diabetes or use insulin to control your type II diabetes, you unfortunately will not be able to receive your required certificate of health. You could also experience an issue if your blood sugar isn’t well-controlled.
